Liverpool chief reveals interest in signing Clint Dempsey

Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has expressed an interest in signing prolific Fulham goalscorer Clint Dempsey.

The American has scored 22 goals this season in a superb campaign for the Cottagers and has been linked with several big clubs.

Sky Bet offer 7/4 that Dempsey will join Liverpool this summer, 6/1 that he becomes an Arsenal player and 8/1 for him to sign for Manchester United.

Werner said: “We never talk publicly about transfer targets, however any team would be lucky to have Clint Dempsey in their squad.”

The Reds are likely to be heavily involved in the transfer market again this summer after a busy 2011 close-season during which they spent more than £80million on the likes of Jordan Henderson, Stewart Downing, Charlie Adam and Jose Enrique.

But despite winning the Carling Cup and reaching the FA Cup Final, Liverpool have endured a disappointing Premier League campaign in which they have won only five times in 18 games at their Anfield home.

The latest poor result came when they lost 1-0 to a Fulham side that contained Dempsey, with Martin Skrtel scoring an own goal.

Dempsey has one year left on his Fulham contract but manager Martin Jol has no interest in selling his star man, instead hoping he will extend his deal with the club.

Jol said: “Hopefully we will keep him because he is here for next season as well. We won’t sell him, so that is easy.”
