Ligue 1 is the top professional football league in France, a competition which has been dominated by Lyon until recently, with Les Gones having won seven straight titles between 2002 and 2008. However, the league has become far more competitive in the past two seasons.
There are twenty teams in the division, with the top three sides qualifying for the Champions League and the fourth and fifth-place teams entering the Europa League. The teams that finish in 18th, 19th and 20th every season are relegated to Ligue 2, with three teams being promoted in their place.
The next set of fixtures are:
Saturday, March 24
Sunday, March 25
Dijon v Caen
Toulouse v Auxerre
Paris St Germain v Bordeaux
Last season it was Lille who were the surprise, but justified title winners, with Rudi Garcia's side claiming their first Championnat for over 50-years. LOSC were followed by last season's champions, Marseille, who finished some way ahead of Lyon, who claimed Ligue 1's third Champions League place. Lille were also the winners of the French domestic cup, the Coupe de France, which allowed sixth placed Rennes to qualify for the Europa League, along with Paris Saint-Germain and Sochaux, who finished fourth and fifth respectively.
However, Lille face a fight to retain their title as they are nine points behind current leaders Paris St Germain. PSG splashed the cash during the summer months and, so far, that investment has been rewarded with 17 wins from their 28 games so far. Former Chelsea and AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti took charge of PSG during the Christmas/New Year period, and his experience will only make them a tougher proposition.
Montpellier have been the surprise package in French football and have confirmed their status as genuine Ligue 1 title contenders this season. Having already sat at the summit on a couple of occasions this season, they head into the 29th round of fixtures just two points behind PSG, and seven clear of third-placed Lille.
