A run of only one defeat in 12 matches gave Lecce a fine chance to climb out of the drop zone, but they have slid backwards again recently with only one point taken from their last three games.

However, they will have taken heart from the fact that point came away to title challengers Juventus on Wednesday.

The problem is that Genoa, the team immediately above them, won 2-1 against Cagliari to leave Lecce staring into the abyss once more.

They still have a mathematical chance of catching Fiorentina, who are in dire straits themselves for different reasons.

The Viola attracted a whole load of unwanted publicity when coach Delio Rossi snapped and physically attacked Adem Ljacic amid a row about the midfielder’s early substitution during the 2-2 draw with relegated Novara.

Rossi was promptly sacked and given a three-month suspension by the Italian FA, with Vincenzo Guerini appointed as coach until the end of the season.

One point is all Fiorentina need to secure Serie A safety, but the change of coach could inspire them to glean more than that from this game if, as it appears, tensions had been running high during the Rossi regime.

Fiorentina could therefore be good value at 14/5, with Lecce 19/20 to give themselves a fighting chance of survival by winning the match and the draw a 12/5 chance.
