Laurent Blanc quits as France coach

Laurent Blanc has confirmed his decision to quit his role as France coach after failing to agree a new contract with the nation’s football authorities.

The former Manchester United man had turned around the French national team following its disastrous 2010 World Cup campaign, and he guided them to the quarter-finals of this year’s European Championships where they were beaten by Spain.

But with his contract set to expire yesterday, Blanc confirmed his departure after failing to agree terms on a new deal with the FFF that would have seen him take charge for the World Cup qualifying campaign.

Blanc said: “During our discussions on June 28, we were unable to find common ground on the management of the French team for the next two seasons.

“Under those conditions and after reflecting on the matter, I could not but confirm to him my decision not to ask for my contract to be renewed by the FFF.”

The FFF have since released a statement, which read: “Within the period provided for reflection, Laurent Blanc, on Saturday contacted the president of the FFF, Noel Le Graet, to indicate his decision not to seek the renewal of his contract of national coach.

“Mr Le Graet has acknowledged and applauded the work of Laurent Blanc at the head of the France team since August 2010.

“The executive committee of the federation is meeting on Tuesday but no comments will be made by the FFF and its president before the press conference scheduled at the conclusion of this work session.”

Blanc was linked with the Tottenham managerial vacancy during Euro 2012 and although reports in the last few days have suggested Andre Villas-Boas is on the brink of taking charge, the Frenchman can still be backed at 7/1 with BetVictor to become Spurs’ next permanent manager.

SkyBet offer 25/1 that he becomes the next permanent Arsenal manager, if Arsene Wenger leaves his post, while StanJames offer the same odds on him becoming the next permanent Real Madrid manager if Jose Mourinho exits the Bernabeu.
