Tottenham striker claims injury was an accident

Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermaine Defoe has spoken out on his challenge, during his side’s 2-0 victory over Sunderland, which left Black Cats goalkeeper Craig Gordon with a fractured arm.

Scotland international Gordon had publicly criticised Defoe for his challenge, saying that the striker had deliberately left his foot in, but the Spurs star insists the injury was inflicted accidentally.

Defoe said:

"It was a funny one, the ball got played through and I thought I could get a toe in - but there was no intention to hurt him,

"So I talked to Darren Bent, to text him and apologise and I did that - I think he is out for a couple of months so if he is watching I am sorry, he knows that is not my game."

Defoe is 4/1 (SkyBet) to open the scoring in Tottenham’s match against Wigan on Sunday at White Hart Lane
