Gap at top of league could be just one point by Sunday night

Inter Milan surprisingly lost 3-1 last night to Catania, a result which blows open the Serie A title race.

Prior to last night’s match, the Nerazzurri were four points ahead of AC Milan, and seven ahead of Roma, however, should that pair win their matches tomorrow, against Chievo and Livorno respectively, then the gap at the top of the table will be just one point, with Roma a further four back.

Earlier in the season Inter had opened up a seemingly uncloseable twelve point gap at the top of Serie A, but a poor run of form has seen them slowly pegged back by city rivals AC, and Claudio Ranieri’s Roma. With both of those sides out of European competition for the season, and Inter still in with a chance of qualifying for the Champions League quarter-finals, there is a very real possibility that there could be a new Italian champion, for the first time in five seasons.

Inter are still odds on (8/13, PaddyPower) favourites to win the Serie A title, although should AC Milan win tomorrow night, that price could be down to nearer even-money.
