Dutchman will not manage Elephants at World Cup

Former Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink will not, as previously reported, take charge of the Ivory Coast at this summer’s World Cup in South Africa.

The Dutchman is due to take over as national boss of Turkey in August, after finishing his contract with the Russian federation, and it was believed that following appeals from key Ivory Coast players, including Chelsea striker Didier Drogba, he would lead the Elephants in South Africa.

However, Hiddink has revealed that after much consideration he will not accept the vacant position, and instead will focus on preparations for the Turkey job, saying:

Although I had a great conversation with the federal president and chief executive Jacques Anouma, I myself had already decided not to go.

"It was a decision taken to avoid unnecessary confusion.

"Though I must admit that with the Ivory Coast it has not been easy."

Ivory Coast are without a manager, following the sacking of Vahid Halilhodzic after a disappointing African Nations Cup campaign, and are 28/1 (WilliamHill) to win this summer’s World Cup.
