Gaston Ramirez to Southampton deal in danger of falling through

Southampton’s move for the highly-sought Bologna striker Gaston Ramirez could be in danger of falling through after the Italians denied a deal had been agreed.

Ramirez had claimed earlier in the week that he was about to join Southampton and that he was excited by the move.

He said: “The English club has reached an agreement with me, it is the classic offer that you cannot refuse for my life as a whole and my family.”

But Bologna president Albano Guaraldi has this weekend criticised the winger insisting that they will not sell the player for a cut-price fee.

“The situation is much more complicated than he thinks,” Guaraldi told Sky Italia. "It's not just about figures, but seeing what is included and what isn't.

“The offer we received has not been considered suitable. His agent has already reached an agreement with the English club, but we haven't. Now the situation is static, we made our demands and will see what happens.

“I don't understand why Gaston said those things. I won't even get into the behaviour of his agent.”

“We spoke to the top Italian clubs about Gaston, but I have always been clear: I'd let him go only for a suitable offer, which so far has not arrived. I maintained my consistency and refused the bid.”

Southampton are one of the bookmakers’ favourites to make an immediate return to The Championship, with Boylesports offering odds of 11/8 about The Saints being relegated this season.

Nigel Adkins’ side begin life in the Premier League with an away game against champions Manchester City this Sunday afternoon. BetVictor offer odds of 18/1 that they cause an upset by taking all three points from the Etihad Stadium, with City at 2/11 for the win.
