FC Porto v Manchester City Tips – City can see off cup holders

Manchester City begin life in the Europa League when they visit holders FC Porto on Thursday night.

City (5/1 Europa League Winner @ Ladbrokes) will be forced to dine at European football’s second table for the remainder of the season after bowing out of the Champions League at the group stage. A win over Bayern Munich on the final night was not enough to keep them amongst Europe’s elite clubs, but they will be confident of making progress in this competition and bookmakers are offering odds on a final showdown with Manchester United (25/1 All Manchester Final @ BetVictor).

It remains to be seen whether or not Roberto Mancini will name his strongest XI in this competition, but even the ‘second string’ players at his disposal will be competitive in the Europa League. First up is an FC Porto side that has failed to hit the heights of last season, when they romped to their domestic title while winning this competition (25/1 Europa League Winner @ SkyBet).

The Portuguese club has been weakened by the departure of coach Andre Villas-Boas and striker Radamel Falcao, and despite Mancini’s claims that the tie has a “Champions League” feel to it, losing the pair appears to have taken its toll on FC Porto. Like City they exited at the group stage of the Champions League, but while the English club had to settle for third place in Group A behind Bayern Munich and Napoli, Porto were sent packing by a combination of APOEL Nicosia and Zenit St Petersburg – who are hardly giants of the European game.

They will be desperate to make amends for that woeful showing (8/5 To Win, 2/1 To Qualify @ SportingBet), but City should prove strong and there are plenty of signs that the Premier League side could return home with a lead from the first leg (13/8 City To Win @ Betfred). Both APOEL and Zenit were able to hold FC Porto to a draw on their home soil, and City are a much stronger side than those two when you consider the likes of Sergio Aguero and David Silva could be on show in this match.
