Tottenham romped to a 4-0 victory at Shamrock Rovers on Thursday night, but it was not enough to keep them in the Europa League.

Spurs overcame a slow start to take a 3-0 half-time lead in Ireland, as they clung on to the slim chance they had of progressing to the knockout phase. Steven Pienaar opened the scoring with the aid of a deflection before Andros Townsend doubled their lead nine minutes later with a shot that found the top corner.

Jermain Defoe added another before the break when he turned to slot home, and after both sides were denied by the woodwork, Harry Kane completed the rout with his first goal for Tottenham.

However, that result proved to be in vain as 10-man Rubin Kazan earned a 1-1 draw at PAOK Salonika to follow the Greek side out of Group A and into the next round of the competition.

Meanwhile, PSV Eindhoven completed their Group C campaign with a 2-1 win over Rapid Bucharest, thanks to late goals from Stanislav Manolev and Tim Matavz. Following the Dutch side into the next round are Legia Warsaw despite a 2-0 defeat at Hapoel Tel-Aviv. The home side had Gal Shish sent off but still took the points thanks to goals from Salim Toama and Avichai Yadin.

Standard Liege and Hannover 96 completed their Group B fixtures with wins on the final night of the group stage. Michy Batshuayi netted the only goal of the game as Standard Liege beat FC Copenhagen, while Konstantin Rausch, Didier Konan and Artur Sobiech all netted for Hannover in a 3-1 win at Vorskla Poltava.

A 1-1 draw at Udinese prevented Celtic from advancing from Group I. The Scottish side had travelled to Italy knowing that a victory would send them through, and they made the ideal start when Gary Hooper put them in front inside half-an-hour. However, Antonio Di Natale netted the equaliser on the stroke of half-time and that ultimately proved to be enough to send Udinese through along with Atletico Madrid, who completed the group stage with a 3-1 win over Rennes.

Birmingham City bowed out of the competition despite Adam Rooney’s goal earning them a 1-0 win over Group H rivals NK Maribor. In the other match, Club Brugge and Braga confirmed their progress with a 1-1 draw.

Meanwhile, AZ Alkmaar and FC Metalist Kharkiv played out a 1-1 draw as both sides advanced from Group G, while Austria Vienna’s 2-0 win over Malmo proved to be in vain as they were eliminated.
