Liverpool travel north to face Hearts in a 'battle of Britain' on Thursday evening while Newcastle United take on Greek side Atromitos and Motherwell host Spanish side Levante in a the playoff round of the Europa League.
The Europa League may be seen as the slightly weaker little brother of the Champions League but recent history has shown that it is certainly a competition worth winning with Andre Villas-Boas's FC Porto winning plaudits, and a big money for both the manager and star players, earned thanks to their victory in 2011.
Last season Atletico Madrid won the Europa League and the feelgood factor around the club has multiplied due to their success. English sides Liverpool and Newcastle United will hope to replicate those sides' success this season while for Motherwell and Hearts it is an opportunity to experience European football.
The two Scottish clubs may not, however, last long in this year's competition. Both have been given tough playoff draws and it would be a huge shock if the Well managed to overcome Spanish side Levante and even more surprising if Hearts beat Liverpool in this week's 'Battle of Britain'.
The opening leg of that tie will be played in Edinburgh on Sunday and the Scottish capital, already packed with festival goers, is likely to have something of an English invasion as the Reds look to give their season a boost by beating their neighbours.
Liverpool could do with the morale boost after Saturday's disappointing Premier League opening day defeat to West Bromwich Albion and it is therefore unlikely that Brendan Rodgers will rest any star names. This should lead to a very intriguing match on Thursday and those outside of the UK will be able to watch the game live on

The firm are also screening Feyenoord's clash with Czech giants Sparta Prague and that is just one of a number of tasty Europa League fixtures this week. Another exciting game involving a Dutch side will see AZ Alkmaar take on Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala, arguably the richest team in the world and home to Samuel Eto'o.
Inter Milan, CSKA Moscow, Marseille, Lazio and Athletic Bilbao are also in action on a bumper night of European football on Thursday and, as usual, Bettingpro have previewed the pick of the week's games.
