Europa League betting – Manchester United and Manchester City favourites

The Europa League draw wasn’t kind to United, City or Stoke – although the Manchester clubs still dominate the betting

Online bookmaker Sky Bet have kept Manchester City as 4/1 favourites for Europa League glory despite being handed a difficult tie against holders FC Porto.

City and Porto were the first two teams picked out in this morning’s draw – but any bragging potential from rivals United was short-lived as they were paired up with Ajax in the last 32. United remain second favourites for the Europa League, but have drifted from 6/1 to 13/2. Stoke, meanwhile, are now 33/1 after being handed a tricky fixture against Spanish side Valencia.

Both Manchester clubs will have hoped for easier routes into the last 16 after being eliminated from Europe’s premier competition, but still remain favourites to advance; City are 2/9 to knock out the Portuguese champions, while United are a similarly short 1/4 to dispose of Frank de Boer’s Ajax. Sky Bet think less of Stoke’s chances, however – the Potters are 2/1 to qualify against Los Che.

If the three English sides can navigate past their illustrious opponents, slightly easier fixtures lie ahead. If City were to be successful against Porto, Sporting Lisbon (28/1) or Legia Warsaw (100/1) await in the last 16; for United, the likelihood is of 16/1 shots Athletic Bilbao, who must first defeat Lokomotiv Moscow. For Stoke, PSV Eindhoven or Trabzonspor – 25/1 and 66/1 respectively – would stand in-between them and a quarter final berth.

Sky Bet’s Dale Tempest told Bettingpro: “It’s not been a great day for English clubs in these European draws! Porto and Ajax were two clubs the Manchester sides would have preferred to avoid, but both Mancini and Ferguson will know they possess far better sides than their continental counterparts. It is tougher than it could have been, but both will expect to go through.

“The same can’t be said for Stoke, sadly, although what a tie they’ve been given. Valencia are third in La Liga and doing extremely well, so Stoke will have to get a positive result at the Britannia in order to have any hope – but with those supporters behind them on a wet, windy midweek, there’s a chance they can. They must then defend for their lives at the Mestalla.”
