Europa League Results – Athletic Bilbao and Atletico Madrid into final

Fernando Llorente netted a last-gasp winner for Athletic Bilbao as they set up a Europa League final showdown with domestic foes Atletico Madrid.

Having seen both Barcelona and Real Madrid exit Europe this week, the pressure was on Athletic Bilbao to deliver against Sporting Lisbon and confirm an all-Spanish final for next month. However, to do that they needed to overturn a one-goal deficit from the first leg in Portugal, which they lost 2-1.

They made an ideal start when Markel Susaeta fired in on 17 minutes to level the tie at 2-2, but Ricky van Wolfswinkel responded a minute before half-time with what could have been a vital away goal. However, within a minute Ibai Gomez had put Bilbao back in front on the night, and level on aggregate, and they avoided extra time when Llorente diverted home with winning goal with just two minutes remaining, securing a 4-3 aggregate victory.

Bilbao will now face Atletico Madrid after they wrapped up a 5-2 aggregate win over fellow La Liga side Valencia.

Determined not to follow in the footsteps of city foes Real, who lost in the Champions League semi-final on Wednesday night, Atletico ensured they would not squander a 4-2 lead from the first leg. And they completed the double over Valencia thanks to Adrian Lopez’s goal on the hour mark.

Despite the tie being over there were still late fireworks as Atletico Madrid’s Tiago was sent off for slapping Valencia striker Roberto Soldado, and he will now miss the final.
