Manchester United and Manchester City have learned their Europa League last-32 opponents, and potential last-16 foes, at the draw in Nyon, Switzerland.
United were dumped out of the Champions League after they lost their final group game against Swiss side FC Basel, while a last-night win over Bayern Munich was not enough to keep City among the elite of European club football.
United have been drawn against Dutch side Ajax in the last-32 and if they progress, Sir Alex Ferguson’s side will take on Lokomotiv Moscow or Athletic for a place in the quarter-finals.
In the last-32 City will face current holders FC Porto, who followed them out of the Champions League. Should Roberto Mancini’s men get the better of the Portuguese side, they will face either Legia Warsaw or Sporting in the last-16.
Stoke City complete the Premier League interest in this competition and face a huge challenge after being paired with Spanish side Valencia. Should the Potters pull off an upset, they will meet either Trabzonspor or PSV Eindhoven in the next stage of this competition.
