Frank Lampard scored the only goal of the game to give England an historic 1-0 win over world champions Spain at Wembley.

The pre-match build up was dominated by fights over poppies but Fabio Capello had focused only on preparing his team to play the world champions at Wembley. He was without captain John Terry, vice-captain Steven Gerrard and talismanic striker Wayne Rooney so he was relying on Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard to lead the side.

The 33-year-old wore the captain's armband and he didn't disappoint, scoring the winning goal against Spain after 49-minutes. A free-kick from James Milner was headed against the post by Darren Bent and Lampard stooped to head the ball into an empty net from little more than a yard out.

Spain, who had been dominant in the first half without looking particularly threatening, were sparked into life by the goal and David Villa rattled the post with a left foot shot. Substitute Cesc Fabregas was then put through on Jor Hart's goal but chose to pass, rather than shoot, and Scott Parker, who went off to a standing ovation moments later, was able to nick the ball from Gerard Pique.

Fabregas should have scored minutes from time when David Villa found him with a clever square pass. The Barcelona midfielder scuffed his shot past the post and the chance was gone.

The win was celebrated by a full house at Wembley and after the match Lampard spoke of the players' delight at having beaten the world champions but also urged supporters not to get carried away with the win.

"We're very pleased. It's great to beat them now - they are the best team in the world," he said.

"We won't get carried away over the fact we beat them. Let's be realistic, they dominated the game. Our back four, with Scott Parker in front, were brilliant. We won't be shouting from the rooftops. We have game on Tuesday [Sweden] and the reverse may happen."

Bookmakers Paddy Power were left reeling by England's 1-0 victory as it triggered their cash back offer. The firm had promised to refund all losing bets First Goalscorer, Correct Score and Scorecast on England v Spain if the Three Lions won the match.
