England v Bulgaria live preview and betting

Steven Gerrard needs to produce a strong performance if Fabio Capello's team are to enjoy a winning start

Fabio Capello has been torn apart by the grubbier elements of the media for his decision to stick with the nucleus of the squad that let him down so badly in South Africa. Perhaps England are destined to underachieve at major tournaments or maybe the supporters should realise that being among the top sixteen teams in the world isn't too bad.

Not that they were slouches when it came to qualifying and Paddy Power offer a best price 1/3 that England begin their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign with three points.

Capello will be without John Terry and Frank Lampard for the Bulgaria and Switzerland matches, although the latter’s absence might allow Steven Gerrard to venture forward more and the England captain is 11/2 with Bet Fred to open the scoring.

Gerrard turned the recent friendly against Hungary on its head with two brilliantly-taken goals and he offers better value than Wayne Rooney, who still looks out of sorts and might have been dropped had Bobby Zamora been declared fit.

The Manchester United forward did end a long-standing scoring drought by firing home a penalty against West Ham last weekend and he is 3/1 with Paddy Power to open the scoring, with Blue Square offering 16/1 that the striker manages a hat-trick.

Meanwhile, Theo Walcott has been scoring for fun in an Arsenal shirt since the season began, making Capello’s decision to omit the winger a peculiar one. The Gunners player is 7/1 with bet365 to score first and he’s certainly got an eye for goal at the moment.

Bulgaria are not a bad team and can be backed at 10/1 with bet365 to win at Wembley on Friday and have some of the trashier tabloids calling for Capello’s head.

However, Dimitar Berbatov no longer plays for his country and its former Manchester City striker Valeri Bojinov who could be the likeliest to score for the visitors.

Extrabet offer a stand-out 14/1 that he breaks the deadlock, although Joe Hart can be backed at 13/20 (William Hill) to keep a clean sheet.
