Frank Lampard will captain England against Spain tonight with Phil Jones set to partner the Chelsea star in central midfield.

Fabio Capello has confirmed that Frank Lampard will captain England against Spain at Wembley, with John Terry, who has been the subject of allegations of racial abuse, rested for tonight's match against the world champions.

In Terry's absence Capello will turn to Everton defender Phil Jagielka, who he claims is fully fit despite having to have pain killing injections in his last two matches for his club due to a broken toe.

"I always speak with the player and I ask, can you play? Are you 100% - not 90%, but 100%? Are you are ready? He said yes," said Capello.

"He said he's OK and said 'If you decide, I'm ready to play'. He trained normally without an injection.

"I have always done two things in my career before I decide about a player. I always speak with the doctors. I ask the doctor whether they can play or not. He says he can."

Jagielka will partner former Toffees team mate Joleon Lescott in defence with Glen Johnson, controversially selected ahead of Lescott's fellow Manchester City defender Micah Richards playing at right back. Ashley Cole will make up the four man defence, which will aim to keep the like of David Villa, Fernando Torres and David Silva away from Joe Hart's goal.

Phil Jones will start as a holding midfielder, alongside Scott Parker allowing Lampard to push forward to support lone striker Darren Bent with Theo Walcott and Stewart Downing expected to play on the wings.

England team to face Spain (unconfirmed):

Hart, Johnson, Lescott, Jagielka, Cole, Walcott, Jones, Parker, Lampard, Downing, Bent
