The race for the 2011/12 Polish Ekstraklasa title looks set to be a thriller, with a host of teams in the running
The Poland Ekstraklasa is the top football division in Poland, with the top three teams qualifying for Europe every season. The champions naturally go through to the Champions League, while the second and third placed teams will compete in the Europa League.
Slask Wroclaw currently hold a two-point lead at the summit, but their form has dipped with just one point from their last two defeats, ending a good run of form that had seen them lose just one of their previous 11 Ekstraklasa outings, winning the other eight matches. That has allowed Legia Warsaw to gain ground and, having now been made favourites to lift the title, it would be hard to overlook the hot hand.
Lech Poznan finished fifth in the 2011/12 Ekstraklasa, with many people suggesting that this was down to being distracted by European competition which saw them beat Manchester City in the Europa League along the way. Lech Poznan were expected to issue a response this time round but they find themselves 10 points behind Slask Wroclaw, and it would take a substantial dip in form from the league leaders to make Lech Poznan a major contender for the title.
Wisla Krakow are the champions and this old and prestigious club are looking to defend their 2010/11 title, but they currently sit 10 points off the summit and, just like Lech Poznan, they will need to find some red-hot form and hope that others do them favours.
