Kenny Miller and Jamie Mackie each netted world class goals as Scotland earned a 2-1 friendly victory in Cyprus.

The Scots could have found themselves behind in the first half as Georgios Efrem shot straight at Allan McGregor before Demitris Christofi headed powerfully into the arms of the goalkeeper, and Scotland then had the Rangers man to thank when he pushed another Efrem effort onto the bar.

Miller dragged an effort wide as Scotland finally got a shot in on goal, but he would not waste his second chance. The Cardiff City striker beautifully controlled Christopher Berra’s ball forward and guided his shot over Antonis Georgallides and into the top corner.

Sinisa Dobrasinovic clattered the post as the hosts sought an equaliser, while Jamie Mackie forced a decent stop from Georgallides at the other end after he skipped past a couple of players.

James Morrison was next to bring a decent stop from the Cyprus number one as his clipped effort threatened to creep in under the crossbar, but the Scots would not be denied a second and it came when Mackie danced past two defenders and coolly rolled the ball into the back of the net.

Christofi pulled one back for the hosts but it proved to be merely consolation, and Jordan Rhodes almost marked his Scotland debut with a goal but his powerful strike was saved by substitute goalkeeper Tasos Kissas.

Bookmakers William Hill were burned by an Ayrshire punter who made a profit of £39,000 by backing Scotland to defeat Cyprus to the tune of £30,000.

The gutsy punter walked into an Ayrshire shop and placed the bet at odds of 13/10 and in doing so, placed the biggest ever bet that Hills have taken on Scotland to win a match.

Hill's spokesman Joe Crilly told Bettingpro.com: "When we heard about the bet, we were very surprised as this unknown Scottish punter was willing to risk such a large stake on a nothing friendly.

"But Craig Levein's men have done the job and in the process have more than doubled this punter's cash."
