Scotland manager Craig Levein will use Friday's friendly with Cyprus to experiment with his squad but it may not end successfully.

Scotland once again suffered a near miss when it came to qualifying (or at least reaching the playoffs) for Euro 2012 and the focus for the the national team has now moved beyond Poland and Ukraine to the 2014 World Cup. Craig Levein has retained his job as Scotland manager and he must now begin his preparations for a qualifying campaign that will see the Scots take on Croatia, Serbia, Belgium, Wales and Macedonia in their quest to reach Brazil.

It is debatable whether the Tartan Army will be able to finish above any of those sides, given the paucity of resources available to Levein. The manager has opted to experiment with some untried players for Friday's match with Cyprus in the NEO GSP Stadium but the list of new caps won't instill the Tartan Army with much confidence.

Huddersfield Town's Jordan Rhodes, MK Dons's Gary MacKenzie and Ryan Stevenson of Hearts are hardly going to turn a poor team into a great one and there are worrying times ahead for Scotland. They are 6/5 at bet365 to beat Cyprus on Friday but even that looks a tall order.

The hosts are ranked 120th in the world by FIFA and finished bottom of their Euro 2012 qualifying group but they are not quite as bad as they first appear. One of their two points was secured in a 4-4 draw with Portugal and they should have done better in matches with Iceland and Norway. The squad is filled with young and relatively inexperienced players but the rise of AEK Larnaca in the Europa League and APOEL Nicosia in the Champions League has been a huge boost for Cypriot football and the new generation believe that they can help improve the national team.

Players like Nestoras Mitidis and Demetris Christofi will cause problems for Gary Caldwell and Christophe Berra, who have looked less than impressive in the English Premier League this season and it wouldn't be a shock in the slightest if Cyprus scored on Friday. The hosts are 23/10 to win in the NEO GSP Stadium or the same price to draw with Scotland but a better bet is simply to back both teams to find the net, at evens.

Recommendation

Both Teams to Score - Yes (Evens, bet365)
