Cardiff City are just two points behind Southampton and West Ham at the top of the Championship and Malky Mackay's side are strong contenders to win automatic promotion to the Premier League this season. The Bluebirds have scored more goals than every team in the division - except the Saints - and their success has been built on a formidable attack, led by former Rangers striker Kenny Miller.

By contrast, the Welsh side's Carling Cup semi final opponents, Crystal Palace, are one of the lowest scorers in English football's second tier. Dougie Freedman's side have been outscored by every club in the Championship - except the bottom three and Bristol City - and they are instead built on a solid defence and hard work ethic.

That was what helped the Eagles to produce the biggest shock of the season and beat Manchester United at Old Trafford. Since then they have, however, struggled slightly for form. Wins over Birmingham City, Nottingham Forest and Millwall were achieved by the narrowest margin, with all three ending 1-0 and they were toothless against Southampton, Leicester City and Derby.

It could well be a similar story against Cardiff on Tuesday night at Selhurst Park. The home side are 7/4 to beat the Welsh side but it is difficult to make a case for a side that doesn't take the game to their opponents. Darren Ambrose, who is 9/1 to open the scoring, is the only player of genuine class in the Eagles side and the former Newcastle and Ipswich winger cannot be expected to score wonder goals in every game.

Cardiff, on the other hand, have a number of match winners. Miller, who is 6/1 to score first, is a fantastic striker at this level, as is Robert Earnshaw (13/2) while Peter Whittingham (17/2) is one of the lower league's most prolific wingers. Malky Mackay will set his side up to attack at Selhurst Park on Tuesday as he will know that a win will put the Bluebirds on the verge of a Wembley final. Cardiff reached the final of the FA Cup in 2010 but were beaten by Portsmouth. It is 8/5 that they beat Crystal Palace and get the chance to redeem themselves in the Carling Cup.
