Could Frank Lampard make shock deadline day move to Manchester United?

Manchester United have again been backed to sign Frank Lampard – but this time before the January transfer window slams shut on Thursday evening.

Earlier in January, the Premier League leaders were linked with a summer move for the England midfielder who has been told he is free to leave Chelsea FC when his contract expires at the end of this season.

That was despite Lampard having been quoted as saying he would not play for another English club.

But the speculation just refuses to go away and now the bookmakers have cut the odds for Lampard to join United by the closure of the transfer window.

Sky Bet have slashed the price to a best available 9/4, while BetVictor offer just 7/4.

It would be an astonishing move considering Lampard has been Chelsea’s best player since he returned from injury, with the team’s form enigmatic following a string of fluctuating results.

But there is always the possibility that Sir Alex Ferguson, who has pulled off shock deals in the past, could pull another rabbit out of the hat and sign Lampard for what would be a nominal fee to push his side over the line in the title race.

The Scot said at the start of January that there would be no incoming transfer business at United this month.

That has already proven not to be the case with the conclusion of the Wilfried Zaha deal – could Lampard be the next arrival at Old Trafford in much more surprising circumstances?
