Didier Drogba struck twice as Chelsea snatched a place in the Champions League knockout stage with a 3-0 win over Valencia.

The Blues knew they needed to win this Stamford Bridge encounter to ensure their place in the last 16, and they made a sensational start by taking the lead inside three minutes when former Valencia star Juan Mata fed Didier Drogba, with the Ivorian making no mistake.

Knowing a point would be enough for them, Valencia responded and Jordi Alba clattered the post before David Albeda forced a fine save from Petr Cech with a shot from distance.

Chelsea then stunned their visitors by doubling their lead on 22 minutes, with Drogba playing provider on this occasion by charging through the Spanish team’s defence to set up Ramires to stab home the hosts’ second.

Daniel Sturridge could have extended the Blues’ lead further as he went close, while at the other end there was a nervous moment when Sofiane Feghouli called Cech into action, but the Czech Republic international was equal to the challenge.

And Drogba then wiped out any chance of a Valencia fightback when he once again made the most of some fine play by Mata to make it 3-0 with 14 minutes remaining.

The final whistle was greeted with scenes of celebration at Stamford Bridge, and Betfred punters who backed Drogba to score first were also celebrating as his second goals ensured the firm doubled their first goalscorer price on the Ivorian.
