Chelsea v Newcastle United result - Chelsea denied by late equaliser

Steven Taylor headed in an injury-time equaliser as Newcastle United twice came from behind to hold Chelsea to a 2-2 draw.

The Blues took a second-minute lead in what could prove to be Carlo Ancelotti’s last managerial appearance at Stamford Bridge, Fernando Torres flicking on Frank Lampard’s corner for Branislav Ivanovic to volley home.

However, Newcastle needed just eight minutes to haul themselves level and it came from a Joey Barton free-kick that flew into the net courtesy of a big deflection off team-mate Jonas Gutierrez.

The Blues almost went back in front in bizarre fashion when Jose Enrique attempted to clear a Ashley Cole cross and the ball almost went into the Magpies’ net off Ryan Taylor.

Nicolas Anelka almost diverted a Josh McEachran shot beyond Tim Krul before Barton got in the way of an effort from Torres as Chelsea looked for a winner, and they thought they had found it when Alex powered in a Lampard free-kick with just seven minutes remaining.

But Newcastle would not leave London empty-handed and, two minutes into added time, Steven Taylor arrived unmarked to head the ball home after Nile Ranger flicked on Ryan Taylor’s corner.
