One of the freshest rivalries in English football visits the new look Wembley stadium for the first time this weekend as Liverpool take on Chelsea in the FA Cup final.

Chelsea to win the FA Cup @ 7/10 at Boylesport normally - now 2/1 with Bettingpro
Under 2.5 goals @ 4/6

Astonishingly, this will be the 31st meeting of the two clubs in the last eight seasons as memories of epic Champions League double headers and numerous domestic cup clashes ruminate fresh in the memory.

During that period the teams have been eerily impossible to split with Chelsea winning 11, Liverpool winning 11 and eight matches ending in a draw; the Blues perhaps holding any marginal advantage having won the 2005 Carling Cup in extra time.
Most recent history, however, is stacked heavily in favour of The Reds. Liverpool have come out on top in each of the last four meetings, and by a 7-1 aggregate scoreline to boot.

Chelsea manager Roberto di Matteo is sweating on the fitness of defenders Gary Cahill and David Luiz; while the prognosis for the Champions League final is promising this game could come too soon. The good news is that they are the only personnel concerns for the London club ahead of the game.

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish will also have a close-to-full squad to choose from as midfielder’s Charlie Adam and Lucas remain the only absentees.

While Liverpool have been the dominant side in recent meetings the bookmakers are favouring Chelsea to turn the tide in this one and price Frank Lampard and co. at odds of 6/4 to win the match inside 90 minutes. Considering the contrasting recent fortunes of the two teams it’s easy to see why.

The Blues continue to go from strength to strength under Di Matteo, despite the midweek blip against Newcastle. Liverpool, on the other hand, have won only four league matches in 2012 and come into this game following another disappointing loss at the hands of Fulham in midweek. They are, however, a different beast in knockout competitions this season and are lining up the domestic cup double this weekend. The match result looks a difficult one to call.

Betting on the goals market can be done with a lot more confidence, though. Of the five FA Cup finals to be played at the new Wembley Stadium only one has produced more than a single goal; three have ended 1-0, one was goalless and settled in extra time and only Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Everton has broken the 2.5 goals threshold.

Five of the last six Liverpool-Chelsea matches have also ended with fewer than 2.5 goals leaving all indicators pointing towards a low scoring game. Under 2.5 goals is available to back at odds of 4/6 and Under 1.5 goals is an 11/5 shot.

Analysis of recent FA Cup finals also suggests that we should back Chelsea to be the side lifting the trophy on Saturday evening at odds of 7/10. The Stamford Bridge club have emerged victorious on five of their six visits to the national stadium, and have never lost a game there inside 90 minutes.

Roberto di Matteo has worked wonders since taking charge at Chelsea, but he still doesn’t have anything tangible to show for his efforts. Victory this weekend would be a perfect precursor to the Champions League final a fortnight later, and set up the Blues for a truly memorable season.
