Anyone who, like me, thought Chelsea might ease off in the Premier League having qualified for the Champions League final was left with egg on their face when the blues produced a 6-1 stuffing of QPR.

Even though the trip to Munich and the FA Cup Final clash with Liverpool are the biggest single games remaining for Chelsea this season, they are clearly keen to secure Champions League football for next term before their Allianz Arena date.

Victory over Newcastle would be a large step in that direction, leaving the Magpies to settle for a Europa League place at the end of what has been a terrific campaign for them.

Knocking out Barcelona at the Nou Camp has clearly sent the Chelsea players’ confidence rocketing and they put four goals past QPR in the opening 25 minutes.

The improvement from the troubled Andre Villas-Boas era has been incredible since Roberto Di Matteo took charge, even when he rests key players. Whatever the Italian touches is turning to gold at present and even Fernando Torres bagged a hat-trick in the thrashing of the Hoops.

Newcastle were right there in the race to finish fourth until coming a cropper at Wigan, conceding four first-half goals as their run of six consecutive wins came to an end in spectacular style.

And the run-in for Alan Pardew’s side is as difficult as it could be with a home game against title-chasing Manchester City and a trip to in-form Everton awaiting them after the visit to Stamford Bridge.

You have to go back to 1986 to find the last time Newcastle won away to Chelsea in the league and there looks to be little prospect of that sequence ending given the way the revitalised hosts are going about their business just now.
