Chelsea are reportedly preparing to launch a £35million bid for Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain.

Higuain has been linked with Chelsea for some time, with his agent and father, Jorge, earlier this year admitting that joining the Blues would be a "great opportunity".

Chelsea face stiff competition in the race to sign the Argentina international, with reports in Italy suggesting AC Milan and Juventus are showing interest, while Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain are also keen.

But according to The Sun, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is preparing to a launch a big-money bid for the forward to replace Didier Drogba, who is set to quit Stamford Bridge this summer.

Real Madrid are still said to be keen on signing Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero as a replacement for Higuain.

A Chelsea source told the newspaper: "Higuain is top of the shopping list.

"He has a phenomenal goalscoring record for Real and for Argentina but he helps make lots of goals too.

"He would be perfect for us, the sort of player who would thrive in the Premier League."
