Championship 2011-12 Play Off Final betting tips - West Ham United v Blackpool preview

West Ham United are strong favourites to beat Blackpool in the Championship play off final on Saturday and the Hammers are strongly fancied to squash the Tangerines at Wembley.

Blackpool confounded expectations by beating Birmingham City in the semi finals of the Championship play offs and Ian Holloway's side will now be looking to replicate their 2010 achievement and win promotion via a Wembley final.

It is 16/5 at Boylesports that the Tangerines beat West Ham United on Saturday afternoon but the common consensus is that this will be one match too many for Blackpool. They finished a full eleven points behind the Hammers and were vastly inferior to their opponents throughout the season with less goals scored and more conceded.

Of course, the play off final is, by definition, a one off match but Blackpool have also been poor in their head-to-head meetings with West Ham this season. The Irons won 4-0 at Upton Park back in October and then beat the Seasiders 4-1 at Bloomfield Road in February. Those sort of results stick in the memory and it will be impossible for Blackpool to go into Saturday's game confident of beating their opponents.

West Ham are evens at Blue Square to claim a third victory over Blackpool this season and they really have to be fancied at that price. Sam Allardyce has assembled a squad that is vastly experienced specifically for a match like this and players like Carlton Cole, who is 6/1 at Ladbrokes to open the scoring, and Kevin Nolan, 9/1 with the same firm, won't be fazed by the atmosphere in a packed Wembley.

It will, in fact, be akin to a home match for the Hammers, who will have the majority of the support in the national stadium. The fans will be expecting a win and that should spur the players on, as it did in their comfortable 5-0 aggregate win over Cardiff City in the semi finals.

Unlike West Ham, Blackpool lack a bit of experience of these big occasions and it could well show on Saturday. Barry Ferguson has been and done it all before, as has Kevin Phillips, but the rest of the squad won't be used to these high pressure situations. That was evident at St. Andrews when Holloway's side went 3-0 ahead on aggregate before conceding two goals and being forced to hang on to their lead in the final moments of the game.

That kind of mental fragility will be pounced upon by Allardyce's side and it wouldn't be a huge surprise to see Blackpool lose heavily again if they find themselves down a goal and forced to chase the game. It is 11/4 at Betfred that West Ham by two or more goals and that is far more likely than a draw, which is the same price at Boylesports.
