French side Lyon saved the best for last as a 7-1 thumping of Dinamo Zagreb handed them a place in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Trailing Ajax by three points, and with a poorer goal difference, it looked as though even a victory would not be enough for Lyon in Group D. Their progression looked even less likely when Mateo Kovacic gave Dinamo the lead despite the dismissal of Jerko Leko, but Lyon came storming back as Bafetimbi Gomis inspired his side with four goals. Maxime Gonalons, Lisandro Lopez and Jimmy Brian were also on the mark and that suddenly piled pressure on Ajax.

The Dutch side did not have an answer though, as they fell to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of a second-string Real Madrid side. With their place in the next round assured, and with El Clasico on the horizon, Jose Mourinho made a number of changes to his starting XI. However, that did not prevent Madrid completing the group stage with a 100% record as Jose Callejon struck twice and Gonzalo Higuain also scored.

CSKA Moscow scored another upset on a dramatic night as they booked their place in the last 16 with a 2-1 win over Group B winners Inter Milan. Moscow looked to be on their way out of the competition after Esteban Cambiasso cancelled out Seydou Doumbia’s opener, but Vasili Berezutsky struck with three minutes remaining as the Russian side went from last to second in the group. In the other match both Lille and Trabzonspor knew a win would ensure their progression, but the pair ended up battling out a goalless draw that resigned Trabzonspor to a place in the Europa League.

The biggest casualties on the night were Manchester United who suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at Basel. Marco Streller and Alexander Frei were both on target as the Swiss side snatched second place in Group C from under the noses of the Red Devils’, for whom Phil Jones was on target. Benfica clinched the group with a 1-0 win over Otelul Galati thanks to a solitary goal from Oscar Cardozo.

And finally, in Group A, Gokhan Inler and Marek Hamsik were on target as Napoli booked their place in the last-16 with a 2-0 win over Villarreal. Missing out were Manchester City despite a 2-0 win over Bayern Munich. David Silva and Yaya Toure were on target for City, but it was not enough to keep them in European club football’s most prestigious competition.
