Wednesday night proved to be a miserable one for Manchester as both United and City exited the Champions League at the group stage.

United, who had been backed at 1.01 to qualify, lacked a cutting edge as they failed to convert a wealth of first half chances after Marco Streller had put Basel 1-0 up in Swtizerland. Wayne Rooney, Nani and Phil Jones all had chances but after they break Basel stifled Sir Alex Ferguson's team and the excellent Alexander Frei sealed the match with six minutes remaining.

Phil Jones gave United hope with a late goal but they weren't good enough on the night and Basel, who were matched at 7.6 to win and 12.5 to qualify, deserved their win. So it's Europa League football and a period of soul searching for United who will have to reflect on a Champions League campaign that never got off the ground.

Manchester City's hopes of qualifying were buyoed by excellent goals from David Silva and Ya Ya Toure against Bayern Munich at the Ethiad Stadium. However, City's fate was not in there own hands and when Napoli took the lead away to Villarreal, and then added another for a 2-0 win, the Blues could do nothing to save themselves. City, who will take zero comfort from their 2-0 win over the Germans, were matched at a low of 1.20 to qualify.

There was an astonishing result in Croatia as Lyon thumped Dinamo Zagreb 7-1 to reward those who backed them at 40.0 to qualify at Ajax expense. The Dutch side lost 3-0 at home to Real Madrid while the French team managed to overturn a goal difference of seven with an incredible performance. Star of the show was Batefimbi Gomis who smashed four goals as 1-7 was matched at 550.00 in the correct score two market.

Vasily Berezutski scored a late winner as CSKA Moscow pulled off a dramatic qualification coup with a 2-1 in away to Inter. The Russian touched 19.5 to get out of their group and 7.4 to win the match. That edged out Trabzonspor who drew 0-0 with Lille.

In the night's remaining match, Benfica rounded off their group-winning campaign with a 1-0 win over Otelul Galati.
