Chelsea won their first ever Champions League trophy and became the only London club to do so, after beating Bayern Munich on penalties.

After a season of absolute turmoil, Chelsea lifted the Champions League trophy for the first time as Roberto Di Matteo did what seven previous managers in the Abramovich era couldn’t.

The question now remains whether or not Chelsea can become the first club in the modern era to defend the Champions League trophy?

With a summer of comings and goings expected, it would take a phenomenal performance to defend the ultimate club prize, however after their Champions League heroics this season, when they defied the odds on a number of occasions, would you bet against them?

The betting for 2012-13 will see the usual suspects of Real Madrid and Barcelona amongst the favourites to lift the trophy.

Barcelona have parted company with Pepe Guardiola after the manager decided to take a break from football, and his assistant Tito Vilanova has now taken the reigns.

Barcelona went crashing out of the Champions league at the expense of eventual winners Chelsea and will look to win their fourth title in eight years in 2012/13.

Real Madrid ousted Barcelona last season as the Spanish Champions and were unfortunate to be knocked out of the Champions League semi-final on penalties to Bayern Munich.

However, under Jose Mourinho they have a manager who has won the Champions League twice, so expect Real to be strong candidates to win their first Champions League since 2002.

Manchester City will be hoping their second foray into the Champions League will be more successful than last season. City were drawn in a tough group and failed to qualify for the knockout stages, however with the experience of last term, and the money at their disposal, they could be a force in 2012/13.

Manchester United failed to qualify for the knockout stages for the first time in a while, and will be focused on looking to win their fourth Champions League title this time around.

Arsenal secured third place in the Premier League to qualify for the Champions League for the 15th consecutive time. Arsenal have reached the Champions League final once before in 2006 but were beaten by Barcelona.
