Celtic FC v Udinese Calcio betting tips - Di Natale can help Friuli to victory

Celtic may be left unhappy on Thursday night
Celtic play their first home game of this season's Europa League group stage against Italian side Udinese and it will be tough for the Scots.

The Hoops only qualified for the Europa League through the back door, after FC Sion were eliminated for fielding ineligible players against Celtic in the playoff round. It was perhaps harsh on the Swiss side but Neil Lennon's side have welcomed the opportunity to pit themselves against some very good sides in Group I.

They weren't disgraced in Spain against Atletico Madrid a fortnight ago but once again an inability to defend professionally cost the Scots, who were a goal behind after just three minutes. A similar start on Thursday, against Udinese, will result in another defeat and odds of 12/5, at Victor Chandler, on the visitors is a very attractive price.

Celtic, who are 7/5, at Boylesports, to beat the Italians, do have a good home record in European competition but that was under previous management. Lennon, for all his passion, is not a good tactician and he frequently comes up short in crucial matches.

That was the case in Champions League and Europa League qualifying last season and also against Sion this year and has frequently been the case in Old Firm encounters, with Walter Smith coming out on top in last season's title decider at Ibrox and the League Cup final.

The problem is that the Hoops don't have any player, either in defence or midfield, that can marshall the back line. Lennon himself was a master of this, as was his assistant, Johan Mjallby, but the likes of Charlie Mulgrew, Kelvin Wilson and Daniel Mastorovic are clumsy rather than controlling and that means that Celtic cannot be relied upon to keep opposing attackers at bay.

Antonio Di Natale may not be in the travelling party that comes to Glasgow on Thursday but his replacement, Diego Fabbrini is considered one of Italy's hottest prospects and is an Italian Under-21 international. His pace could well prove too much for the home defence and at 9/1 (Boylesports) Fabbrini could be a good bet to open the scoring.

Recommendation

Win Market - Udinese (12/5, Victor Chandler)
