Carling Cup Final Preview – Liverpool v Cardiff City Odds

The first Wembley final of the year takes place this Sunday as Cardiff City take on Liverpool in the Carling Cup.

Liverpool are the masters of the League Cup.  Including this year’s final, the Reds have the most appearances in the final (11 times).  They have also won it more than any other teams (7 times). They are Unibet’s favourites at 1.16 to capture their 8th League Cup trophy.

There might be plenty of reasons for Cardiff to fear their Premier League opponent but they can take heart from their FA Cup final appearance back in 2008. Though they were beaten by Portsmouth on that occasion, the Bluebirds have built on their success in the cup and have gone from strength to strength, narrowly missing out on promotion to the Premier League on separate occasions.  They are at odds 5.00 to triumph on Sunday.

Liverpool have endured a mixed 2012 so far. Although they knocked out Manchester City en-route to the final of the Carling Cup and Manchester United in the FA Cup fourth round, they were beaten by lowly Bolton in the Premier League.  However, cup competitions are always different for Liverpool, as shown from their 6-1 thrashing of Brighton in the FA Cup fifth round.

This year’s final sees Liverpool striker Craig Bellamy reunited with his boyhood club.  “I certainly won’t celebrate,” said Bellamy, when he was asked whether he will celebrate if he scores.  It will be a bittersweet occasion for the Welsh striker should Liverpool win.

The final also showcases “the battle of the Gerrards”, as Liverpool skipper Steven takes on his cousin, Cardiff City defender, Anthony.

“Not only have Liverpool not won the League Cup since 2003, they have never won a trophy at the new Wembley Stadium.  In fact, they have not won a trophy since the 2006 FA Cup in Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium.  It will be the perfect opportunity for them to break the duck,” said Erik Bäcklund, Head of Unibet Sportsbook.

“Manager Kenny Dalglish and captain Steven Gerrard are keen to end their trophy drought.  However, Cardiff are a force to be reckoned with and will do all they can to pull off a big cup upset.”
