Bundesliga tips

Can Arjen Robben help Bayern Munich to the Bundesliga title? (credit: Ryu Voelkel)
Borussia Dortmund are top of the German Bundesliga as they look to retain the title they won last season.

Dortmund romped to the crown in 2010/11 and although they have been unable to replicate that form, they have taken top spot from Bayern Munich. Bayern went on a tear in the first half of the season, bouncing back from an opening-day loss to Borussia Monchengladbach to win 13 of their next 16 games to hit the summit prior to the annual winter break.

However, they were unable to continue their fine form when the season resumed. Draws with Hamburg and SC Freiburg, and a defeat to Bayer Leverkusen, handed Borussia Dortmund the opening they needed, and the defending champions have taken full advantage of that opportunity to go five points clear at the summit. The bookmakers stood by Bayern Munich following the first poor result, but the second resulted in them making Borussia Dortmund their favourites, and the leaders' odds have only shortened in recent weeks.

Borussia Dortmund, under the stewardship of Jurgen Klopp, are a championship calibre side and could conceivably stay ahead for good. A flawless second half of the season may prove to be too much to ask for, but they have opened up a big enough gap to where a couple of slip-ups may not prove too costly. Therefore it is hard to look past them as winners of the Bundesliga. Borussia Monchengladbach are in third place, three points behind Bayern Munich, and a battle for second place may be the best they can hope for in the coming months.

Things are heating up at the other end of the table with just six points separating the bottom four. Hertha Berlin and Augsburg are among those fighting against relegation, and both have to be fancied to make an immediate return to the second tier of German football at the end of this season.
