Benitez won’t give up title chances

Will Davies - 23 Feb 2009

Defiant Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez is refusing to concede the Premier League title to Manchester United.

Liverpool currently lie seven points behind Sir Alex Ferguson's side with just 12 games remaining in the season. Bookmakers can only see the title going one way, currently Man United are huge 1/10 favourites with Coral, whereas Liverpool are a very risky 12/1 with Boylesports to steal the title. Despite Benitez’s resilience punters should be fairly confident of their paycheck backing Man United to the title.

"I have confidence we can still win it," said Benitez, after his side clinched a late equalizer and saved a 1-1 draw with Manchester City at Anfield. However drawing at Anfield simply isn’t good enough and Liverpool’s failure to win means that they have now drawn six of their 13 home games this season.

Benitez admitted that his Liverpool side must beat Man United at Old Trafford on 14 March to keep their hopes alive, however United have won 12 and drawn one of their 13 matches at home, Rafa will really have to do something very special to keep his chances alive.

It’s hard to even consider any other team’s chances of winning the title, however if you’re an extremely optimistic Chelsea fans then you can find odds of 18/1 with Stan James. Although for those odds to payoff both Man United and Liverpool would have to drop a considerable amount of points over the final third of the season.

Man City manager Mark Hughes does not hold out much hope for Liverpool overhauling Man United.

"It is not over, there are still a lot of games left, but it depends on Manchester United slipping up," said the former Man United star.

"United don't do that very often. It is very much in their hands and they will have to lose three games now."
