Nani fashioned a close-range opportunity for Wayne Rooney, but the England striker mis-hit the ball and the chance was gone.Rooney was then denied by Yann Sommer in the Basel goal, and things got worse for United when Vidic was stretchered off with a knee injury.Basel almost gifted the Red Devils the equaliser they needed when Markus Steinhofer diverted a Nani cross towards his own goal, but the defender was fortunate to see the ball come crashing back off the crossbar.The hosts then doubled their lead when Alexander Frei headed home Basel’s second six minutes from time, and Phil Jones’ late goal was not enough to prevent United from exiting at the group stage for only the third time in the last 17 years.
