BSC Young Boys v Tottenham Hotspur betting preview

Spurs begin their Champions League campaign on a plastic pitch

During the month of August, bet365 are offering all new customers up to £200 in free bets when they open an account.

Tottenham are in Switzerland this week hoping to land a place in the Champions League group stages. It would be a severe anti-climax if Spurs failed to get through the play-off after last season's heroics which saw them finish ahead of Manchester City and Liverpool.

Young Boys might have beaten Fenerbahce in the previous qualifying round, although Spurs should prove too strong over two legs and they are 4/5 with Blue Square to achieve victory in Switzerland.

Harry Redknapp will want to leave nothing to chance for the second leg at White Hart Lane, although he’ll be without the experienced Ledley King whose knee problems prevent him from playing every match.

Even so, the way that Tottenham tore Manchester City apart at White Hart Lane will be encouraging for the manager. Jermain Defoe came close to scoring and can be backed at 5/1 with Stan James to score the first goal, while Gareth Bale (12/1 Bet Fred) catches the eye when you consider how much the left-sided player gets forward.

Paddy Power offer 13/10 that Spurs keep another clean sheet and that’s in stark contrast to Victor Chandler’s 5/6 – they clearly don’t expect Heurelho Gomes to be fishing the ball out of the back of his net during the ninety minutes.

However, the team from Berne will be no pushover as they finished second in the Swiss league last season and beating Fenerbahce was no mean feat. A passionate home crowd will hope they can take advantage of their opponents’ lack of European experience and you can get 4/1 (Ladbrokes) that Young Boys win the game.

Victor Chandler offer a best price 11/4 that the game is drawn at the Stade de Suisse, with Young Boys defender Scott Sutter looking to make an impression in the second leg. He was born in the London suburb of Enfield and grew up as a Tottenham fan.

"It was amazing for me when I was watching the draw with my dad and the first two names out were us and Tottenham,” Sutter said. "I jumped up and punched the air. The club I support and once had a season ticket; I can finally play at White Hart Lane. It couldn't get any better."

Sadly for Sutter, the two legs are likely to end in disappointment although at least he can go and watch Spurs in the Champions League group stages!
