Portsmouth boss eager for new challenge

Portsmouth’s new manager Avram Grant has said his lack of experience in relegation battles will not hinder his side in their quest to remain in the Premiership this season.

The Israeli has experience of title challenges, having won championships with both Maccabi Tel Aviv and Maccabi Haifi, as well as guiding Chelsea to second place in his half season as manager with this season’s Premier League pace-setters.

Grant admitted his inexperience, but said he is looking forward to the challenge, saying:

"I don't have enough experience at the bottom of the leagues - I am guilty. I hope I will not have much experience of this.

"I've spent more than 90% of my life at the top but I know what I need to do here. I have a lot of experience in football.

"One thing I always say to myself when I come into a situation like this is 'get used to it as soon as possible'.

"I'm not looking back and saying I was managing top teams and now I am here. I have a job to do and I am going to do it."

Portsmouth will welcome the distraction of a Carling Cup quarter-final clash with Aston Villa on Tuesday, where Grant’s side are 13/5 (Coral) to emerge victorious.
