Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger must spend, says Fabio Capello

England manager Fabio Capello has joined in with calls for Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger to strengthen his squad before the transfer window closes.

Wenger has come under fire after six trophyless seasons at the Emirates Stadium, and the departure of several players during pre-season has left supporters fearing another season without silverware.

Cesc Fabregas, Gael Clichy and Emmanuel Eboue have all left the club this summer without being replaced, and it appears increasingly likely that Samir Nasri will be following them out of the North London club.

The Gunners, ravaged by injury and suspension, were booed off the pitch following the 2-0 home defeat to Liverpool on Saturday, and they face a huge Champions League qualifying clash with Udinese later this week with a place in the lucrative group stage on the line.

Wenger has insisted he does have money to spend but is insists he will not buy for the sake of buying, and England boss Capello has now warned the Frenchman he must delve into the transfer market before the transfer window slams shut at the end of the month.

Capello told Sky Sports: “I hope he will stay on, I have a good relationship with him.

“He's a really good manager, but it's not a good moment. It's difficult after six years without a trophy for such an important club like Arsenal.

“I think he needs to buy some new players, some important players, but it's difficult to find top players at this moment because the best players are playing with important teams, teams who want to win.

“I think Arsenal have got money but it's difficult to find top players to improve the team.

“If you spend the money buying normal players, it's not good. You need to spend money to improve the team.”
