Alex McLeish sacked - Paul Lambert favourite for Aston Villa manager's job

Alex McLeish has been sacked as Aston Villa manager, with the club confirming he has left with immediate effect.

Betting had been suspended on the Scot leaving Aston Villa after a huge gamble.

Sky Bet closed their market on McLeish’s future after frenzied speculation that the manager would pay for the club's poor season with his job.

And former Villa striker Stan Collymore appeared to confirm the expected news when he tweeted that McLeish had texted him to say: “Time's up big man, hope Villa go on from strength to strength.”

Villa ended the campaign with a 2-0 defeat at Norwich to sit 16th in the final Premier League table, only two points clear of relegated Bolton, and that looks to have persuaded owner Randy Lerner to act.

Sky Bet's Chris Spicer said: “We put up the market for McLeish to be manager at the start of next season earlier in the day and he has been backed to leave non-stop, so we pulled betting. We opened at 1/5 and took money at 1/16 before betting was suspended.”

Paul Lambert is the big mover in the next Aston Villa manager market and is now as short as 6/4 with Sky Bet, although Paddy Power are among several firms who still go 5/2 about the Norwich boss taking over.

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez is a best-priced 3/1 with Sportingbet, who have former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez as their 6/1 third favourite.

Darren Haines, spokesman for Paddy Power, said: “Many experts say Martinez deserves to manage at a bigger club than Wigan. But having turned Villa down once before, the question now is whether he is too good for the Villans given the state of their squad and its future prospects.”
