Sun Dream Team Fantasy Football tips
Winning at fantasy football isn't easy, especially Dream Team, the competition run by The Sun. This is arguably the biggest one out there, so there will be plenty of stiff opposition for you to face, even if it's just the other people in your mini-league.
However, I've provided some pointers to make sure that you're on the right track when the season kicks off on Saturday 16th August. After all, you don't want to have regrets about anyone in your side after a couple of games, when the first transfer window seems a long way away. Read on some pearls of wisdom!
1) Although The Sun allow you to make unlimited transfers up to Monday 11th August, it is better to wait until the very last moment to enter your team (unless you're restrained by mini-league requirements). A lot can happen between 11th and 16th (when the season kicks off) and the last thing you want to see is your player crocked in training, immediately reducing your team to ten men.
2) The Champions League and UEFA Cup count towards the scoring. Therefore, most of the players in your team should be featuring in Europe next season. In addition to the Big Four, this also includes Man City, Everton, Spurs and Portsmouth, while Villa are trying to scramble in through the Intertoto Cup. Ideally, you want players from the 'Big Four' although this is not always possible from a budgetary point-of-view.
3) Transfer-wise, you can only make a total of six all season. It therefore doesn't take a genius to work out that at least five of your picks will be in your team until May. You should classify these players as bankers, ensuring they are likely to be starting most matches and have historically scored well in the Dream Team game. The second transfer window is not until 29th January - a long time to wait if one or two of your team members are warming the bench every week.
4) This game is very subjective. With five points awarded for a Star Man, three if your player scores 7 or more in a match report and eight (!) if he's the weekend star player in his position, you need to assess who the popular players are among journalists. Last year, Liverpool's Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres were racking up these kind of points, while it's also worth noting that England players tend to get over-marked. This was certainly the case with Ferdinand, Lampard and Rooney last season.
5) Spread the budget evenly throughout the team, although there's nothing wrong with being a little top-heavy in the striking department. Strikers tend to get MOTM more than defenders, while you get bonus points for hat-tricks. However, don't find yourself too short in defence, where you're forced to pick Stoke, Hull and Fulham defenders - you'll be regretting this as soon as the season starts!
