Fantasy football - club-by-club pointers - part 4

Dave Higgins - 14 Jul 2008

Whether you're competing against friends, family, workmates or a complete bunch of randoms, there's nothing quite like finishing top of the pile and claiming the bragging rights. Every season, we want to have the edge in our fantasy football game of choice and I've listed below some of the players worthy of consideration at this stage.

SUNDERLAND

With KENWYNE JONES out until Christmas, the Black Cats are deliberately hunting a new striker, although it’s worth considering the striker when he returns from injury. Aside from him, there wasn’t a lot to get excited about last term, although KIERAN RICHARDSON could go well if he steers clear of injury – quite a big ask. CARLOS EDWARDS is also a class wide player and could be good last name on the teamsheet!

TOTTENHAM

Is ROBBIE KEANE staying? What about DIMITAR BERBATOV? Both of these strikers deserve strong consideration if they stay at White Hart Lane, while they might offer decent value if they move to another Premier League club. The former would be my preference, especially if he can stop missing from the penalty spot! There’s plenty of talk surrounding LUKA MODRIC, although too much shouldn’t be expected of him, while (shock horror) the Spurs defence might actually be half-decent this term. ALAN HUTTON and JONATHAN WOODGATE could represent decent picks, with Juande Ramos surely determined to start collecting more clean sheets.

WEST BROM

There’s been something of an exodus from The Hawthorns since the Baggies gained promotion, something which doesn’t bode well for the new campaign! Of the current members of the squad, the two players to catch the eye in FF terms are ROBERT KOREN, Albion’s dangerous winger, and ISHMAEL MILLER. The  21-year-old striker has bags of potential and might find himself in line for more starting appearances now that Kevin Phillips has departed for Birmingham.

WEST HAM

DEAN ASHTON will feature on many FF player’s shortlist, especially as he’s cheaper than most of the ‘Big Four’ strikers. If the England international stays fit, this could be the season where finally realises his potential. MARK NOBLE is still young, open to improvement and takes the penalties for the Hammers, while the likes of KIERON DYER and SCOTT PARKER are class acts, but just seem be injured more than they are fit. Worth keeping an eye out for FREDDIE SEARS, who is dirt cheap and started to appear off the bench towards the end of the season.

WIGAN

It’s reasonable to assume that the Latics will improve under Steve Bruce, although they still lack a prolific striker, something that EMILE HESKEY patently is not. It’s worth keeping tabs on RYAN TAYLOR, a defender-cum-midfielder who is a mean free-kick and penalty taker, while JASON KOUMAS is likely to provide plenty of assists next season. Some will take a punt on MARLON KING to deliver the goods this season, justifying the £5million that was spent on him last term.
