England endured more penalty shoot-out misery at a major tournament as Italy marched on to the semi-finals of Euro 2012.

The Italians dominated throughout as Andreas Pirlo produced a masterclass to control proceedings, but they were lacking at the decisive moment and let England off the hook on countless occasions as they game turned into a marathon.

Both Daniele De Rossi and Alessandro Diamanti were denied by the upright, and when the latter did find the net with a header at the back post, his ‘goal’ was correctly ruled out for offside, much to the relief of Hodgson and his men.

The Three Lions must have been believing their penalty hoodoo would finally end when Riccardo Montolivo dragged his spot-kick wide, but Ashley Young rifled his attempt against the crossbar and Ashley Cole saw his tame attempt saved by Gianluigi Buffon, allowing Diamanti to slot home the winning penalty kick.

Following the penalty shoot-out defeat, William Hill are now betting on when the Three Lions will actually win one, and they are 8/1 to fail to win one until after Euro 2020.

Hill's spokesman Joe Crilly told Bettingpro.com: “The hopes of a nation have once again been dashed from 12 yards and it is impossible to ever see England winning a shootout.”
