England captain Steven Gerrard has hit back at claims Wayne Rooney was to blame for the Three Lions’ Euro 2012 exit.

Rooney missed the first two games of the competition due to suspension, before scoring the only goal of the game against Ukraine to send England through to the knockout stages.

However, the Manchester United ace failed to make much of an impact against Italy as England lost out on penalties in the quarter-finals, drawing strong criticism from some pundits.

But Gerrard feels that the whole squad should share the blame equally, telling The Sun Sunday: “I just think that ever since Wayne has been around, and because of his performances in Euro 2004, there is an expectation that he comes to these tournaments and wins them all on his own.

“I just think that's unfair - especially when it goes wrong and people then point to Wayne and his performances and blame him.

“But the responsibility has to be on all 23 players. It's unfair to look at Wayne and say because he didn't play well it's the reason why we haven't won.”

England have been drawn with Montenegro, Ukraine, Poland, Moldova and San Marino in World Cup 2014 qualification, while their next game sees them face Italy again in a friendly in Switzerland on Wednesday 15th August.

The Three Lions are 18/1 to win the 2014 World Cup, with holders Spain 5/1 and hosts Brazil 7/2.
