Spain knock Republic of Ireland out of Euro 2012

Republic of Ireland became the first team to exit Euro 2012 after a 4-0 defeat to Spain in Gdansk on Thursday evening.

Fernando Torres hit the headlines for the right reasons on Thursday evening, scoring twice in a -0 victor for Spain over Republic of Ireland, which saw Giovanni Trapattoni's side eliminated from Euro 2012.

The Boys in Green were always going to struggle against the reigning European and world champions but they weren't helped by some poor defending after just 4-minutes. Ireland failed to clear inside the penalty area and Torres, who has struggled this season for Chelsea, took the ball past Richard Dunne and fired beyond Shay Given.

It was then one way traffic with Spain able to pass the ball around their opponents at will and it was only a matter of time before Vicente Del Bosque's side doubled their advantage. The only surprise was that it took until 48-minutes but when it came it once again too easy for the Spaniards with David Silva able to turn inside the box and steer a left footed shot past Given.

Torres then scored his second of the night on 70-minutes to make it 3-0 and fully justify the faith shown by Del Bosque. The 28-year-old is now 3/1 at Boylesports to finish as the top scorer at Euro 2012 and it would be a major surprise if he didn't start Spain's final group match against Croatia.

Cesc Fabregas, a late substitute for Torres, put forward his case for a starting spot on Monday by adding a fourth goal after 83-minutes. The Barcelona midfielder has now also scored two goals at Euro 2012 and is now trading at 21.0 in betfair's Golden Boot market.

Spain are now 13/5 at Bwin to win Euro 2012 but there was little that was learned from a match in which the favourites were rarely tested. Paddy Power had promised before the match to refund any losing bets if 'La Furia Roja' failed to win and there was never any question of the Irish firm being forced into a payout.
