John Terry has dismissed suggestions that he could quit international football, saying: “I’ll never turn my back on England.”

The Chelsea defender was stripped of the England captaincy due to his racism row with Anton Ferdinand, over which Terry is due in court after Euro 2012. He denies the charges against him.

The episode led to Fabio Capello resigning as England manager after the FA decided to remove the captaincy from Terry, with Roy Hodgson appointed to replace the Italian.

There have been rumours that Terry might call time on his international career, but in an interview with The Sun he insisted he wants to continue with the Three Lions.

Bookmaker Coral quote Terry at Evens to start the opening Euro 2012 game against France alongside his Chelsea team-mate Gary Cahill in the centre of defence, 9/4 to partner Anton Ferdinand’s brother Rio and 5/1 to be joined by Joleon Lescott.

The 31-year-old said: “I’m not going to throw away my international career for anyone. I’m proud to represent my country. I’ll never turn my back on England.

“I’ve never considered quitting. I was deeply disappointed by the FA’s decision to strip me of the England captaincy as it meant the world to me. But sometimes you just have to accept these things and move on.”

Terry also expressed his disappointment at Capello’s departure but welcomed Hodgson’s installation as his successor.

“From day one Fabio Capello stood by me and said he knew the English law and the English way, that you are innocent until proven guilty, and I respected him for that,” said Terry.

“I always thought Roy Hodgson was a genuine candidate to succeed him and I was surprised nobody really mentioned him.

“Clearly all the hype was for Harry Redknapp, but the FA have taken their time to appoint the right man to lead us to success and I think it’s a great appointment.”
