Italy v Republic of Ireland odds - Irish backed to bow out with draw

The Irish were soundly beaten by Croatia and Spain in their two previous matches at the tournament, but punters clearly think they can dash the Italians’ hopes of reaching the quarter-finals.

Italy must win to stand any chance of qualifying for the last eight but their odds have been pushed out to 3/10 by Bet365.

The draw has been the most popular outcome, while there has also been support for the Republic although 11/1 is still available.

Goals are expected too for score draws have attracted plenty of money in the correct score market, 1-1 having been cut by several bookmakers although there is still plenty of 10/1 around, while 2-2 has also had a few nibbles.

Irish players have attracted support in the first goalscorer betting and if punters are to be believed it could be a memorable occasion for Damien Duff having been named captain for his 100th international appearance.

The Fulham winger has been cut to 25/1 to score first by Bet365, who have also clipped the odds for Robbie Keane, Jonathan Walters, Simon Cox and Aiden McGeady.

Republic defender Richard Dunne said Giovanni Trapattoni’s side want to salvage some pride after receiving plenty of criticism for their Euro 2012 performances so far.

Dunne said: “If we win against Italy it restores a bit of pride, not just in Irish football but in ourselves.

“There's more hurt than anyone can imagine, so for ourselves we need to win a game.

“We need to make sure we can get through the first 10 minutes without conceding a goal.

“It's another game and we are representing our country so regardless of how we feel inside, we must go and give 100% and make sure we turn the hurt into passion and win the game.”
