Germany v Netherlands betting tips - double Dutch denial on the cards

Mario Gomez of Germany scores their goal in the Euro 2012 Group B match against Portugal at Arena Lviv on June 9, 2012 (credit: Joern Pollex/Getty Images)
Germany know a draw will be more than acceptable against the Netherlands and their second match in Euro 2012 Group B looks set to finish 1-1.

Match odds
Germany – 6/4 (Bet365)
Draw – 23/10 (Paddy Power)
Netherlands – 21/10 (Coral)

In the so-called ‘group of death’, the Germans secured a priceless 1-0 win over Portugal in their opener which means a point against the Dutch will do just fine with a match against pre-tournament outsiders Denmark still to come.

However, the need of a victory is much greater for Holland after they surprisingly lost to Denmark, leaving them with no margin for error if they are to reach the last eight.

That defeat means this will be a different game than if both sides had started off on a successful note. Bert van Marwijk’s side will have to go for it and much will depend on their attacking players who had contrasting performances against Denmark.

Arjen Robben looked the most dangerous Dutch forward, whereas Robin van Persie had an off night and there has to be a worry that his superb goalscoring exploits for Arsenal last season have taken their toll.

There did not look to be a great deal of cohesion about the Netherlands, who appeared more a collection of individuals than a team, and they will have to gel better if they are to gain the result they need against the Germans.

Even though they beat Portugal, it was not a fantastic display by Germany in a disappointing game, but you get the impression they may be content to do just enough in the group phase before cutting loose when it matters in the knockout rounds.

They still look highly plausible winners of the tournament and if Mario Gomez can make the most of the chances that come his way, Joachim Low’s side should be very difficult to stop.

But this game is unlikely to see Germany come out with all guns blazing and it could be that they have to soak up quite a bit of Dutch pressure.

Robben (11/1 with William Hill to score first – an appealing price) knows the strengths and weaknesses of the German defenders from being a Bayern Munich player and could give them some problems, while Schalke’s Klaas-Jan Huntelaar will be chomping at the bit for a chance if Van Persie is firing blanks again.

We know all about Germany’s counter-attacking ability from their thrashing of England at the World Cup and that side of their game could come into play here.

A draw would be just about good enough for both sides and therefore 1-1 looks a highly probable scoreline, with perhaps Robben finding the net first.

Recommendation: 1-1 draw (6/1 William Hill)
