Euro 2012 Spain v Italy betting tips - Both teams can find the net at 6/5

In probably the pick of the first matches, along with England v France, these two European heavyweights go head to head four years after Spain won on penalties in the quarter-finals on the way to their Euro 2008 triumph.

On that occasion it finished 0-0 after extra time, but now there are expected to be goals for each team.

Spain are justifiably the favourites to retain their title but could be vulnerable at the back due to the absence of Carles Puyol with a knee injury.

When you consider their great club teams Barcelona and Real Madrid base their success on huge individual goal contributions from their star players it’s easy to see that the Spanish place the emphasis on attack more than defence.

That statement admittedly flies in the face of the stats from the 2010 World Cup, when Spain did not concede a goal in the knockout stage.

But don’t forget they started that tournament slowly, losing 1-0 to Switzerland, and also conceded against Chile before tightening up for the phase that mattered most.

Without Puyol at the back there are fears that Vicente del Bosque’s side could be vulnerable and that they may rely on outscoring the opposition this time, like the current Barcelona and Real Madrid teams do.

Italy, unusually for them, do not have a stand-out striker in their line-up these days so coach Cesare Prandelli has bulked up on his forward options by taking five, headed by Manchester City’s Mario Balotelli.

It’s usually the Azzurri’s way to adopt a cautious approach to the group stage of a tournament, but that may have to go out of the window if they concede an early goal to Spain as they will not want to find themselves bottom of the group table.

These are difficult times for the Italians with the latest match-fixing scandal overshadowing their participation in Poland, but on the other hand it could just free them from the usual shackles if they feel they have nothing to lose.

With Prandelli considering deploying a three-man attack in Balotelli, Antonio Cassano and Riccardo Montolivo, it is unlikely he will just ‘park the bus’ against Spain and the odds for both sides to find the net look more than fair at 6/5.
