The reigning European Championship and World Cup champions were rarely troubled as goals from David Silva, Jordi Alba, Fernando Torres and Juan Mata gave them a resounding victory - the most convincing in a European Championship final.

It took the Spanish 14 minutes to hit the front, as Cesc Fabregas cut the ball back from the by-line on the right and Silva headed home superbly into the far corner of the net.

Four minutes before half-time it was 2-0 as Xavi's superbly-weighted pass allowed Alba to run clear and place a low, left-foot shot under the advancing Gianluigi Buffon.

Injuries reduced the Azzurri to ten man in the second half and late on Spain took advantage, with Torres springing the offside trap to beat Buffon and become the joint highest scorer in the tournament.

Two minutes from time the scoring was complete when Torres set up Chelsea team-mate Mata to sidefoot into an empty net.

Spain will now have a chance to make it four titles in a row at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, with La Roja 9/2 to triumph in South America, while the hosts are 7/2 and Argentina are 5/1.
